'You've got a friend in me'

Friendship is very important in marriage without the friendship binding you together it is hard to have that emotional connection.  I think of that song “Be That Friend” by Michael Mclean I first heard from one of those old church movies from the church of Jesus Christ of Latterday saints “Together forever”. My sisters and i would watch this after church because we were not allowed to watch any other television but church movies. I guess this one on repeat week after week became embedded in my mind. I am glad that it did, although I didn’t fully understand it while young this song constantly comes to my mind when I am going through conflict or argument with my own husband.
Well first of all I will give the brief on this certain part , the married couple are constantly arguing , feeling like they want different things in life now and  thinking what should they do and I remember the line the wife says” they weren’t really good friends like they used to be” and she said  “ you can turn to the world for answers , the worlds answer was divorce  , but i didn’t get married to get divorced,  and then you see this couple on their knees and spending quality time eventually being able to work through these conflicts.  Ok that was really brief and its only a maybe 10 minute segment and as my husband will tell you  I’m terrible at retelling stories or movie lines …so I recommend looking it up and watching it for yourself.

The video itself is a  little outdated and corny but the messages within it have not changed over time.  Anyways back to the song “Be that friend
The words are “well your friends know what’s right and your friends know what wrong and your friends all know sometimes its hard to choose
But the friend who helps you see , where your choices will lead is the kind of friend you never want to lose
Its that friend who leads with love , doesn’t push doesn’t shove just reminds you of the truth you have always known
Then does more then just talk takes your hand and starts to walk by your side along the road that leads back home

And this friend seems to see all the great things you’ll be even when some things you do would prove him wrong, but he always believes that the real you he sees is a champion his simply cheering on”
The last line especially goes through my mind when I feel like my husband lets me down
“Be that friend , be that kind that you have prayed you might find and you will always have a best friend  come what may”.

If we spend time working on our friendship , caring about our partner their wellbeing , their fears, their hopes and dreams as a real friend does , if we do these things we will strengthen our friendship and relationship.  Sometimes when I argue with my partner I will think and sometimes say “ I don’t like you right now, but I still love you “ and that is because we have that friendship.
Friends have disagreements but it is the bond we have and sincere desire for each others happiness in life that makes us not give up in conflict or when feeling annoyed, instead we know we have a strong friendship at the base of this relationship that is worth saving and improving. Sorry to add another song reference but hey music is my language "You've got troubles I've got them too , there isn't anything i wouldn't do for you, we stick together and we see it through cause you've got a friend in me". There is  always going to be troubles , there will be the good, the bliss and the ugly but together we will see them through.

That ugly Pride

I am a mum of 4 with a husband who is very forgiving of my issues including my need to be right over and over again, I figure he is just living true to the motto happy wife happy life. Ok all jokes aside this has actually been yet another lesson we have had to learn in our marriage   how it isn’t always about who is right and how we need to choose our battles .I remember a quote from President Monson “ never  let a problem to be solved become more important than a person to be loved” . Sometimes I feel this to be true in marriage the problem being the argument or matter that is drawing you to the point of not letting your pride down to see the other side of the story or, to see or even acknowledge that maybe just maybe you are in the wrong in this battle.  I have spoken about this before on my blog of the years and years long battle I have had with my husband about where to live. He wants to live in America and I want to stay in Australia , there is good...

gridlocked

gridlocked Gottman said when talking about working on gridlocked marital issues “Understand that working on these issues will take time. You may find that when you first begin to recognize and acknowledge your dreams, the problems between you seem to worsen rather than improve . Be patient. Acknowledging and advocating for your dreams is not easy . The very nature of gridlock means that your dreams appear to be in opposition, so you’ve both become deeply entrenched in your positions and fear accepting each others influence and yielding”.   The gridlocked disagreements share four characteristics You’ve had the same argument again and again with no resolution Neither of you can address the issue with humor, empathy or affection The issue is becoming increasingly polarizing because it would mean selling out – giving up something important and core to your beliefs, values or sense of self. So of course it seems only logic to avoid gridlock in the first place and enjo...

Keep the wolves away!

—Marrying and raising children can yield the most valuable religious experiences of their lives. Covenant marriage requires a total leap of faith: they must keep their covenants without knowing what risks that may require of them. They must surrender unconditionally, obeying God and sacrificing for each other. Then they will discover what Alma called “incomprehensible joy.” Elde Hafen Covenant Marriage Ensign Nov 1996 This is an amazing talk about marriage being based on a contract or a covenant , meaning do we look at marriage as a contract we can just tear up or walk away from at any time when it gets to hard or difficulties come our way . Or do we look at marriage as a covenant a promise that we will invest all we can to keeping and staying together. Elder Hafen quotes Marriage is by nature a covenant, not just a private co...
